Who is eligible to adopt children in Georgia?

There are many family dynamics. Sometimes, couples or individuals have multiple children, and other times, they are unable to have children or do not have their own for other reasons. On the other side, sometimes, parents are unable to care for their children, and the children end up in foster homes. To help children who find themselves in this situation, people who want to have a family and care for these children can adopt.

Not just anyone who wants to have a child is able to adopt though. There are certain requirements that must be met before the adoption. An individual who is seeking to adopt must be at least 25-years-old, if single, and at least 10-years older than the child he or she is seeking to adopt.

However, if it is a married couple, there is no age requirement. They still must be at least 10-years older than the child they are seeking to adopt. The person or couple adopting also needs to reside in Georgia for at least six months prior to filing the petition.

Adoption is a big responsibility, and it is important for those seeking to adopt to know that they must be willing and able to care for the child. After the adoption, they will be responsible for meeting the child's needs. While it is a big responsibility, it is also one that can be fulfilling and beneficial for both the child and the parents adopting the child.

If the person or couple meets the criteria above, they may be able to adopt a child in Georgia. But, simply being eligible is just the start of the process. The couple or person must then go through a lengthy application process before the adoption is finalized. It can be a complicated process, and it is important to understand it to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. Experienced attorneys understand the process and may be able to guide one through it.
