Potential one-time payout to avoid alimony after a divorce

Many of our Atlanta area readers know that in recent years family law courts have sought new and innovative ways to resolve disputes involving soon-to-be ex-spouses, especially when significant assets or children are involved. In the news coverage of a recently announced celebrity divorce, it appears that a unique approach has been proposed by one side - a one-time lump sum payout in place of alimony.

Our readers may have seen the news that celebrity musicians Gwen Stefani and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, are headed for a divorce. Both have enjoyed quite a bit of success over the course of their careers as the singers for two different bands - Stefani for "No Doubt" and Rossdale for "Bush." However, it appears that Stefani may have been the more successful of the two, with some reports estimating her fortune at nearly $140 million.

Stefani was the one who filed for divorce, and apparently the process has been anything but smooth so far. And, it appears that Stefani is anticipating a claim for alimony by Rossdale. As a result, she has reportedly offered Rossdale a one-time lump sum payment instead. The initial reports did not detail the amount of the offer, or how Rossdale reacted, other than that Rossdale apparently did not immediately accept the offer.

Disputes can arise during a divorce, whether it is over property division, alimony, child custody or child support. Creative solutions are sometimes a necessity in order to allow both parties to get the process over with and move on with their lives.
