Mel B's husband files for joint custody in divorce

Many people in Georgia are familiar with Mel B, the former Spice Girl and current Judge on the television show, America's Got Talent. Well, she recently filed for divorce from her husband of almost 10 years, Stephen Belafonte. In her filing, she requested the court not award spousal maintenance. She also filed for a restraining order from her husband, alleging abuse throughout the marriage.

However, in his response, Belafonte not only asked for spousal maintenance, but also that Mel B be required to pay for his attorney fees. He is also seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple's children. The couple also stated different separation dates in their respective filings.

This is just the start of their divorce, and it could take a while before it is finalized. And, while they are much more famous and more money than the average couple in Georgia, they will still deal with many of the same issues.

These issues include child custody, parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance, asset division and other issues. These issues are separate issues, but are also intertwined, just like things during the marriage. They can each come with their own complications. How each issue is resolved depends on the specific circumstances of the marriage though, and the results vary, depending on those circumstances.

Many people in Georgia go through divorce. While these divorces will not be as public as Mel B and her husband's divorce, they will deal with many of the same issues. There are different ways to handle a divorce though, and the length and complication generally is determined on how well the couple is able to work with each other. Experienced attorneys understand all the issues that may come up in a divorce and be able to guide one through it.
